petoskey requiem

by Àm Acevedo

we met beside your frigid shore,
–just once, that mortal time–
knowing in the depth of fall we’d meet once more.
your sunset claimed me, crying “mine!”
as dusk rose from the bay and the sun sung its goodbye.

under a darkening pallid sky
so clear it was this was forever.
a bonding of our souls, never to die.
you promised to hold me as I die, be still together
until you close my lifeless eyes the day they faint.

when that future sunset comes and paints
its shadow on my feeble soul,
i’ll hear your requiem song without restraint
as my lake-blue whispers stroll
wrapped in the warmth of northern cold.

the rustling waters’ crash, bold
against petoskey stones (the hearts
of those that came before, the souls of old),
will lend its calm as I depart
draped in a shroud of reddish dusk.

your snowflakes’ fall on savage gusts
shall lull my eyes and weep,
and as they sway on their descent shall trust
the night when I become you in my sleep
and part of you turns into me.
